Installing Batteries in your ZOLL AED Plus

The ZOLL AED Plus takes consumer 10 lithium batteries (type 123 photo lithium batteries). We strongly recommend using only Duracell Ultra Type 123 Batteries to assure long life. Never use Panasonic or Rayovac per ZOLL Medical. Once new batteries have been installed the date should be recorded. Batteries installed in the ZOLL AED Plus typically have a 5 year life from the date of installation. A good rule of thumb is: if you have CPR-D pads (which also have a 5 year shelf life) you should make it routine to change the batteries at the same time as the 5 year pads. Typically there are 2 dates on the batteries. The manufacture date and an install or use by date. Neither of these dates is an actual expiration date.

Q: I just changed my batteries and it still shows a red x in the status indicator?
Turn the AED on and let it perform a self test. If the unit says "change batteries" and you just changed the batteries then you probably forgot to press the button in the battery compartment. Assure that you actually have new batteries. Remove all the batteries from the battery compartment. slowly re-insert the batteries and pay close attention to the positive and negative symbols to assure they are being installed correctly. Once all the batteries are installed wait until the unit says "If new batteries press button" then press the button inside the battery compartment. Q: Why does the ZOLL AED Plus use off the shelf batteries and not a battery pack?
We think it's genius. Most other AED manufactures use proprietary battery packs, the problem with this is that you are held hostage to what ever the manufacture decides to charge for that battery pack and you have to normally order it. If you cut open most other AED battery packs you will often find they use the same batteries but inside a expensive case.

Q: What causes the batteries to deplete in the ZOLL AED Plus when I haven't used the AED?
The ZOLL is pre-programmed to run self tests on a regular basis. This will deplete the battery over time.

Q: Should I have a back up set of batteries for my ZOLL AED Plus?
This is a question we get often.If your doing what your supposed to be doing and closely monitoring the status of your AED and the expiration dates of the pads/batteries then its probably not necessary. Especially since the batteries can be purchased almost anywhere batteries are sold and can be acquired relatively quickly.
